Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a Domain Name and why do I need it?

Like a telephone number, a domain name is a unique identifier that points to a certain site on the World Wide Web. Each computer on the Internet has a unique numeric Internet Protocol address such as 131.215.3.29 . These numbers are not user-friendly and give no indication as to what this address contains. A domain name is not only a lot easier to remember but could also indicate what the Web Site contains. It is easier to remember old-books.co.za than 121.202.7.23 and, if you are a collector of old books, you have a fair idea that this site will contain information that you would find interesting.

Typically, domain names operate like telephone dialling codes in reverse. The first portion of the name points to a specific site, the second points to the broad category the site falls in and the third portion is the country code where the site is registered. For example, absa.co.za refers to ABSA Bank's Web site. This site is registered in the commercial (co) domain in South Africa (za).

In all countries there are Domain Name Servers (DNS), computers that will take the domain name and look up the relevant Internet Protocol (IP) Address and feed this address back to your computer so that it can connect with the site you wish to visit.
2. What does it mean to “transfer” my domain name?
Your domain name is still in the hands of the old hosting provider, unless the Registrar holding your domain name is informed. Once your domain name registration record is updated to reflect Eiledon's network the domain is 'transferred' and you can enjoy the benefits of us managing your hosting requirements.
3. How much does domain registration cost?
The costs vary depending on the type of domain you wish to register (ie. whether it is a .co.za, .com, etc). Please see our domain pricing section.
4. How much does a domain transfer cost?
Transferring a .co.za domain is free. For costs on transferring other domain types please see our domain pricing section.
5. Which services are affected when transferring my domain?

Website browsing will now be served by Eiledon's network.

FTP details will be changed. Please note that a domain transfer does not mean that your content is transferred; you will need to transfer your web site content independently.

Email accounts will be transferred. You will need to inform us of the email addresses required @yourdomain.com so we can set them up for you.

A new database will be set up if you host the domain on the Biz Basic or Biz Standard account. Please note that if you had a database on your domain before, you will need to download the data and then upload it to your new database. Assistance in this regard will be provided on request.

6. Who is the legal owner of my domain?
You are. Eiledon is listed as the technical and billing contact, as we would be managing the domain on your behalf. You will be listed the owner, thus having complete ownership of your domain name.
7. Can I have more than one website address?
Yes. You can have multiple domain names directing visitors to one website. In this case, one or more domains are parked on a primary domain. For more information please see the Domain Parking page.
8. Can I register a domain name without signing up for hosting?
Yes. In this case you would be parking a domain. Please note that if you would like to use email with the domain you will require  a hosting account.
9. I have a website with another provider; can I still have Eiledon manage my domain?
Yes. Here you would be using our URL Forwarding service, which is a small monthly fee. If you would like to use email with the domain you will require a hosting account with us.
10. May I register my domain directly through the registrar?
Yes you may. Please note however that you are then responsible for completing the registration process and for renewing the domain at the end of the period. Nameserver information will be provided to you on request.
