Apache
The most widely available HTTP server on the Internet. It supports the PERL and PHP languages.
Backbone
A high-speed line or series of connections that forms a major pathway within a network. The term is relative as a backbone in a small network will likely be much smaller than many non-backbone lines in a large network. In general, the better the backbone of the hosting company, the better the availability of the web sites that run on their computers. Eiledon uses Verizon (formerly Uunet) as its backbone.
Bandwidth
Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be transferred over the network in a fixed amount of time. On the Net, it is usually expressed in bits per second (bps) or in higher units like Mbps (millions of bits per second).
Database
A database is a collection of information stored in a computer in a systematic way, such that a computer program can consult it to answer questions. The software used to manage and query a database is known as a database management system (DBMS). The properties of database systems are studied in information science.
Disk Space
The amount of hard drive space on the server that is available to your hosted websites.
Dynamic Website
A website that is database driven - content is stored in a database and displayed in predefined ways. The owner of a dynamic, database driven website will use a content management system to manage the content of his or her website.
Email Accounts
The number of POP email accounts you are entitled to.
File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
The protocol used to transmit (upload & download) files between a local computer and a remote computer via the Internet.
FrontPage Extensions
Frontpage extensions can be thought of as "mini programs" that allow features of a web site created with MS Front Page to operate smoothly. It is possible to use MS Front Page to create a web site and host that site on a server that doesn't offer FP extensions, however some of the powerful features of the program cannot be used in these web sites, such as the search feature. Generally we recommend against using FrontPage if possible.
Hosting
Hosting (also known as Web site hosting, Web hosting, and Webhosting) is the business of housing, providing a server, and maintaining files for one or more Web sites
Linux Hosting
Web hosting that supports Linux, an operating system that was derived from Unix. All Eiledon's hosting plans use a Linux server.
MySQL
MySQL is a database program that stores and processes information.
Secure Shell (SSH)
Secure Shell is a command line interface used to securely access a remote computer.
Server Side Includes (SSI)
A type of HTML comment that directs the Web server to dynamically generate data for the Web page upon request.
Static Website
A static website cannot be updated unless the web site designers manually edit the pages. The website designer will need to upload the web page before the changes are seen by visitors at the website.
Statistics
Many hosting companies run software on their web servers that collect usage information about your web site and compile it in a user-friendly, easy-to-read format for you to analyze trends about your web site. Having access to statistics is critical if you need to know how many visitors are coming to your site, which web pages receive the most attention, and how much time people actually spend browsing your site.
Telnet
Telnet is a user command using TCP/IP protocols to access a computer remotely. To have access to that computer, you must have permission, meaning you must authenticate to the system with a valid username and password. When you are connected to the network using telnet, you can enter commands and they will be executed as if the were being entered directly onto the server console.
Webmaster
The person responsible for maintaining and updating a Web site.
