Advertiser
In affiliate marketing, the advertiser is the company that supplies the goods being promoted by the publisher.

Affiliate Marketing
A system where a revenue sharing partnership exists between a merchant (advertiser) and one or more affiliates (publisher), where the affiliate is paid a commission for referring clicks, leads or sales to the merchant website.
Authorization
An authorization is the approval from the financial institution that issued the card holder's card that allows you to accept the transaction for a given amount. The merchant in the form of electronic or written receipt retains the 4-6 digits.

Content Management System (CMS)
A CMS is a collection of tools designed to allow the creation, modification organisation and removal of information from a Web site. Usually the user need not have any knowledge of HTML.
Digital Certificate
Online identification authenticates a consumer, merchant and a financial institution. Digital certificates are used to encrypt information exchanged in Secure Electronic Transactions. A certificate is a public key digitally signed by a trusted authority (the financial institution) to identify the user of the public key.

Conducting business, in the form of buying and selling goods and services, online.

A list of the most common questions and their responses. FAQs are widely used on the Internet and usually provide a good mechanism of gaining an overview on a topic.
Inbound Links
Links that are directed towards your website. The more inbound links to your website, the higher your link popularity.
Internet Marketing
Strategies and techniques applied on the Internet to support a company's overall online marketing objectives.
Keyword Density
A property a web page which indicates how close together keywords appear. Some search engines use this property for ranking web pages.
Keywords
Words used by a search engine in its search for relevant Web pages.
Link Building

Link Popularity
Link Popularity refers to the number of sites that link to your web pages from various search engines such as Google, MSN, HotBot, etc. Many search engines use Link Popularity as a factor for determining page rank.

Merchant Account
A written, commercial bank account established by contractual agreement between a merchant/business and a bank and/or a payment gateway. The agreement contains the respective rights, warranties, and duties with respect to accepting bankcards like Visa or MasterCard. You must apply for this account directly from your bank, or from the Payment Processor.
Meta Tags
Information placed in the HTML header of a Web page, providing information that is not visible to browsers. The most common meta tags relevant to search engines are keyword and description tags.
Niche Directory
A website with a directory of website addresses and details all in a particular industry. Eg a Travel Directory.
osCommerce
osCommerce (“Open Source Commerce”) is a powerful e-commerce and full-featured online store-management software program. It uses the Apache web server, PHP language and mySQL database and is available for free under the GNU General Public License. Websites created with osCommerce can be easily maintained and administered by a non-technical person using the Administrative interface and a web browser.
PageRank
Google’s patented method for measuring page importance on a scale from 0 - 10, where 10 is the highest. The PageRank algorithm analyzes the quality and quantity of links that point to a page.
Pay For Performance Advertising
The range of methods of advertising on the Internet where you only pay for the performance you desire. Examples are pay per click advertising and using an affiliate network to promote your goods and services.
Pay Per Click
Online advertising payment model in which payment is based solely on qualifying click-throughs.
Payment Processor
A company that attends to the actual processing of a credit card transaction, to be distinguished from the merchant account bank, which merely acts as the recipient of the transaction, proceeds.
Portal
A high-profile website with large quantities of information and references on various topics made available to a community of internet users.
Privacy Policy
A Web site's official statement on the type of information collected on a site, how the information will be used, how the person can access this data and the steps for having the data removed. A privacy statement will also usually include information regarding systems that are in place to protect the information of web site visitors.
Publisher
In affiliate marketing, the publisher has the task of promoting the advertiser's goods or services.
Search Engine
Internet search engines (eg Google, AltaVista) help users find web pages on a given subject. The search engines maintain databases of web sites and use programs (often referred to as "spiders" or "robots") to collect information, which is then indexed by the search engine. Similar services are provided by "directories," which maintain ordered lists of websites, eg Yahoo!
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
A generic term relating to search engine specialists that assist web site owners to improve rankings and as a result, visitor numbers which equate to more sales in a given period.
Search Engine Results Page (SERP)
The page or pages of results returned by the search engine for a query given by a searcher.
Search Engine Submission
The act of supplying a URL to a search engine in an attempt to make a search engine aware of a site or page.
Secure Electronic Transaction (SET)
A secure payment protocol developed by MasterCard and Visa designed to ensure security for bankcard transactions over the Internet. In denying merchants access to credit card information, securing details between the shopper and the bank.
Secure Socket Layer (SSL)
A secure web protocol designed to ensure card holder information is safe during the ordering process.
Shopping Cart
A shopping cart is a piece of software that acts as an online store's catalog and ordering process. Typically, a shopping cart is the interface between a company's Web site and its deeper infrastructure, allowing consumers to select merchandise; review what they have selected; make necessary modifications or additions; and purchase the merchandise.
Unique Hits
The individual visitors that visit a site. A unique visitor may visit a site several times a week; however, because it is the same person, it can only count as one unique visitor.
Voice Over Internet Protocol
The technology used to transmit voice conversations over a data network using the Internet Protocol. Such data network may be the Internet or a corporate Intranet.
Vortal
A buzzword derived from "Vertical Portal". It is a portal that offers services / information, specializing in only one particular area. Eg golf
Web Directory
A web directory is a directory on the World Wide Web that specializes in linking to other web sites and categorizing those links. Web directories often allow site owners to submit their site for inclusion.
