In order to claim ownership of a website address you need to register it. Registration involves an annual fee, which varies depending on the domain name extension (ie, .co.za, .com, .net, etc). Registration normally takes 24 hours, also depending on the domain name extension required. For some country-specific domains, such as .de (Germany) or .ru (Russia) you may need to provide proof of residence in those countries. You do not need to launch a website in order to register a domain and use it to receive emails @yourcompany.co.za. However, you cannot launch a website professionally without first registering a domain name.
